The exhilarating process of transforming a vision into solid matter is still a wonder to me. When I sculpt, I feel as if I was the tool and not the sculptor; the image seems to deliver itself through me. I work quickly and steadily, without analyzing, from an internal three-dimensional vision that is already complete in my mind's eye. Concepts of time and myself dissolve. I can begin sculpting in the evening and in what seems to be only a few hours, realize the curious pale light outside is the dawn. At some point the emerging sculpture begins to radiate a life of its own, which thrills me.
I have come to love sculpting portraits because of the intimacy that naturally arises between my subject and myself. There is a mystical process that occurs when you take the time to really look at someone. You can’t help falling in love with their internal beauty, no matter what their age or external appearance. It is a joy to focus on capturing that essential, individual beauty.
