John Burns
John Burns is a nationally recognized logotype designer, having created the Ruffles, Sara Lee, and Baby Ruth brands, among others. Painting is the latest embodiment of his creative expression.
John started painting landscapes when he lived in northern California. There, he was inspired by the golden glow of the hills in the late afternoons.
When he moved to the Big Island in 2008, he sought out the Hawaiian subject matter that most stirred his heart. On a casual outing to the Hamakua coast, he was literally stopped in his tracks by the stunning colors and shapes created by the sun shining through the bromeliads in the parking lot of Tex Drive In (yes, the home of the malasada).
That chance encounter opened up to John a whole new world of Hawaiian nature in close-up—dynamic compositions of organic shapes, colors radically changed by sunlight and shadow, great boldness juxtaposed with great subtlety. These light-infused Hawaiian botanicals became his new inspiration. He knew he had to paint them, and paint them large.
