Martin is primarily a plein air painter today doing many small oil paintings on location. Occasionally he uses one of these sketches to create a larger painting in his studio. He finds the outdoor work keeps his eyes and other senses tuned to the real world in a way photographs don't.
Martin was born in Schenectady, NY, grew up outside Chicago, then St. Louis. His first real art experience was in a drawing class as he discovered that he could create a similar image on paper of a person or object. That experience changed his world. It woke him up to seeing the visual world. Martin received a Fine Arts degree from the University of Arizona and later migrated to the San Francisco Bay area and discovered plein air painting while still working the 'day job' in the aerospace industry. In 1990 he made his first trip to Kauai and discovered the island's dramatic beauty. He and his wife moved to Kauai in 1998. He has concentrated on his development as a plein air painter. Many of his paintings have been juried into regional and national shows of representational art and awards. Organizations include;
